To Improve The Lives Of Northern Michigan Families

One of my most important goals is to always speak the truth as I see it. While there are many things my platform could focus on, I believe better economic opportunities for Northern Michigan families is the bedrock for a better quality of life. This includes better jobs, healthcare, housing, education and stewardship of our amazing natural resources. In all these areas, we can do better.

As a structural engineer, I’ve seen what can happen when people of good faith and good will come together to fix obstinate problems. Make no mistake. Michigan’s lagging economy has been a persistent problem for generations. Can we fix this and turn things around? You better believe it!

Brendan Ryan’s Platform

My Primary Focus Is On Economic Outcomes For Northern Michigan Families

Jobs

Michigan’s median household income declined from 7th to 38th in the nation between 1970 and 2023. During that same time period, inflation adjusted household incomes grew by 2.9% as inflation skyrocketed by 785%. The great resurgence of manufacturing, in which we have invested tremendous energy and resources, has not materialized. It is time to reimagine job creation in Michigan. We can do better.

Healthcare

Healthcare costs continue to rise while access to care continues to shrink. Rural communities in Northern Michigan are often hit hardest by funding cuts and consolidations. Many families, even those with health insurance, are one major health event away from financial crisis. We can do better.

Education

Early childhood education is limited in Northern Michigan, forcing families into narrow or inconvenient options—or pushing a parent out of the workforce entirely. Teacher pay in our public schools does not reflect the education, skill, and dedication the job requires. Many families feel their children aren’t receiving the education their tax dollars should provide, and support for public schools is slipping. Yet one of America’s greatest promises is that every child deserves a good education. We can do better.

Housing

Access to quality, affordable housing in Northern Michigan is a real challenge. Too many families struggle to secure a home that fits their needs and their budget. New construction isn’t keeping pace with demand. Inflated material costs, restrictive building codes, and lending rates in some areas have slowed development. We can do better.

Stewardship

Northern Michigan’s natural resources make this region extraordinary; we have world class hunting, fishing, camping, and outdoor recreation that form a substantial portion of the cultural identity of our home. But these resources are often threatened by corporate interests that strain our energy grid, pollute our soil and water, and fail to replenish what they take. We can do better.
